How will your CSE membership affect your day-to-day life? What does credit union membership mean for your checking account, your auto loan and your financial future?
You already know that being a credit union member is different from being the customer of other financial institutions. You also know that it’s not just about semantics, members of credit unions OWN those credit unions. That’s a different story from other financial groups, where only a few shareholders pocket all the profits. More on that in a moment, you not only don’t own the bank, sometimes it feels like the bank owns YOU!
However, there’s more to it than ownership. Credit unions, by definition, are not-for-profit cooperatives. Years ago a common credit union tagline was, “not for profit, not for charity, but for service.” Every nickel earned by the credit union goes directly back into benefiting all members of that group. Members are connected by common bond fields of membership fostering a sense of community. It’s what makes credit unions cooperatives.
That can happen in several ways. One, you may receive a special dividend. Yes, money right back into your pocket at the end of our fiscal year. Our profits stay with the local communities we serve. At CSE we have a social responsibility, we are committed to strengthening the community and helping people of modest means. CSE promotes and provides financial education to members and community.
You have a say in running the credit union as a member. One member equals one vote. In fact, we encourage you to join us during the month of May at our annual meeting to make your voice heard. If you have the time and interest, we’d love you to consider joining our board of directors. Any CSE member in good standing who is 18 years of age or older qualifies to serve on our board. Our credit union benefits from people joining the board, to share in advising the smooth running of the credit union. Watch for more information about nominations later this year.
CSE believes that our credit union is YOUR credit union.
That’s credit union membership. It’s ownership. It’s cooperation. It’s about working together for the common good of the people.
Welcome to the family!
